2007/08 CJUM BOARD OF DIRECTORS VOTING PACKAGE
Here are the candidates for the upcoming UMFM Board of Directors Vote. The vote will take place at this year's AGM's being held on August 23rd, 25th and 27th.
Leigh Anne Caron – ex-Host - “The Root Cellar” / “Free Range Tuesday” / “Eve’s Third Wave” / ex-Director of Board & Policy Development
It is with interest that I apply for a seat on the UMFM board of directors. I can offer an array of experience and knowledge, from both the community and the campus that will be an asset to UMFM. I have been a volunteer with UMFM since 2002 and within the 5 years with the station I have gained experience with hosting talk radio, free range and a music show. I have an understanding of the workings of the station, the programming and the importance of UMFM on campus and the community. My experience in the community will also contribute to this position. As a human services manager i have experience working with and mobilizing a range of individuals, motivating them to fulfill mandates and meet programming requirements.
I strongly believe in the importance of UMFM and the quality programming that it offers Winnipeg and I would love to continue to be apart of that as a member of the board.
thank you

Jennifer Jozwiak – Host - “Ultrasonic Film” / Assistant Program Director
I am interested in a position on 101.5 CJUM-FM’s Board of Directors. I am an enthusiastic, self-motivated individual with an extensive background in management and event planning and promotion. In the past, I have managed various Movie Village and Music Trader affiliates as well as the Cinematheque Box Office. As a result of these experiences, I have developed excellent organizational skills as well as the ability to work both individually and as part of a collective. I am the co-host of UMFM’s Ultrasonic Film, Winnipeg’s only radio talk show on film, which is co-sponsored by Winnipeg Film Group’s Cinematheque. Ultrasonic Film regularly reviews movies in addition to examining the theoretical and practical aspects of filmmaking with guests ranging from university professors to feature filmmakers. My experiences as co-host have familiarized me with both the technical and creative demands of campus and community radio.
As the Assistant Program Director for the summer at UMFM, I am coordinating a multitude of projects in celebration of our tenth anniversary in 2008, including a short film competition, a feature film showcase and a radio documentary challenge.
Further, I am the Festival Director of The Winnipeg Short Film Massacre, a local non-profit film festival which aims to help establish Winnipeg as a Canadian centre for arts and culture. I am responsible for all aspects of the festival organization, including innovative promotion through print, radio and online resources, as well as proposals for funding, sponsors and venues. The Winnipeg Short Film Massacre has screened annually at the Cinematheque to sold-out audiences since its inception in 2004. My involvement with the promotion and organization of festivals and events has familiarized me with the Winnipeg arts community, its members, and their work.
As a student at the University of Manitoba as well as an active volunteer at UMFM, I will be able to adequately address the needs of present and potential UMFM listeners as well as those of the station. While the station faces the practical challenges of equipment purchases and maintenance as well as funding, new challenges in the form of evolving media and changing audience reception require innovative solutions. However, over the next two years, 101.5 CJUM-FM can reach an even broader listening audience through the collective effort of its volunteers and Board of Directors.
Thank you for your time,
Jenn
Pat Krawec – Producer - “Alert Radio”
In my 10 years of broadcasting I have worked in television, film, and new media but radio has always been where my heart is, especially campus community radio. If accepted for a position on the UMFM board I would look forward to working with the other members to help community and campus radio thrive in Winnipeg.
I am interested in using my professional skills to benefit the community. I give workshops on video fieldwork and media literacy for non-profit organizations and run first time filmmaker programs for youth. I sit on the board of Video Pool (a non-profit artist-run centre dedicated to independent video, audio and computer integrated multimedia production) as vice-president and Art From the Heart (a non-profit inner city arts program and exhibit) as video curator.

Joe Myles – Host - “Ham Radio” & “The Wee Hours” / Ex-Board Member / Ex-Promotions Coordinator
Please consider this my application for a position on the station’s board of directors.
I have been hosting a couple of shows, the Wee Hours and Ham Radio, on the station since it’s return in 1998, and have also been actively involved with UMFM’s various promotional activities, developing one of our logos and acting as the main distributor of the station’s program guide. I have also sat as a working member on the station’s board of directors in the past, and would relish the opportunity to do so again.
I am a native Winnipegger who has been active in the local music scene for nearly 30 years as a fan, promoter and journalist with many of the city’s freelance papers. My musical tastes are extremely varied and I feel that this is reflected in the music I play on my radio show. I have helped to organize a number of Winnipeg’s more memorable events, including countless dance parties and raves, as well as the Walk for Peace, which was attended by more than 25, 000 people. I have many great marketing and capital generating ideas that I could share, and feel if implemented properly, could be a real boon to UMFM.
I am a hard worker and would appreciate the opportunity to contribute ideas that will help with the future of UMFM and all of the possibilities that might entail.
Sincerely,
Joe Myles
John Prentice – Host - “Planet Mainstage” / Ex-President West End Cultural Center
I would like to apply to be on the Board of Directors for CJUM.
I have been involved with The Station as a host/producer of shows and volunteer since 1998. (Folkus, The Worldbeat Show, and Planet Mainstage). I have had extensive background on similar volunteer boards in Winnipeg. Iım especially experienced on these boards in their formative stages. With the West End Cultural Centre, I am currently still involved as Past President, where we are currently going through the tumultuous venture of building a new theatre. On the Winnipeg Folk Festival Board, I was on many committees, including Personnel and Marketing Committee Chairman over my 14-year term from 1983-97. My main livelihood for 25 years was as Producer/ Director at Winnipeg Videon Community Access Television, where I worked from its onset till Videon was sold in 2000.
As you know, I strongly believe in community access to the media. I believe we already have strong foundations and a great track record at CJUM. We have been fortunate to have strong and dedicated staff like you, Michael and your predecessors. I would be happy and excited to work on the issues as you have delineated and ensure those foundations for the future.
Yours Sincerely,
John Prentice
Dan Raposo – Host - “It’s Too Early For This Show” / Ex-Board Member / Ex-Production Coordinator
I would like to be considered for a position on the Board of Directors.
My experience at the station started just after its inception only a couple of months on the air. As a member in the community I was looking for a place to advance my knowledge and life. What I found was all that and more beyond what I could have imagined as I met and interacted with many individuals of varying degrees as an instructor on and off the air, a co-coordinator, director and leader in production and a member of the stations programming committee, as well as a personality on the air sharing my growing musical know how with who ever would listen. All that helped make me the person I am today. I look back and think of all the station did for me as a person in the community and I look to the future and want the station to continue on the right course its been directed on so that more people, on campus or in the community can benefit from the station like I did for years to come.
I hope you will consider me for a position on the Board of Directors
-Daniel Raposo
Roger Rempel – Host - “Drums & Wires”
My name is Roger Rempel and I've held a strong passion for UMFM since I was a kid in school listening to the original UMFM, getting exposed to music I never would've heard of if not for college radio. Many years later, as an engineering student, I got excited about UMFM again when Joey Myles began circulating pamphlets in University Centre talking about bringing back UMFM to our local airwaves. In September of 1998, UMFM rose from the dead, and I was selected with the honour of being the first voice behind the mic as we went back to the airwaves. I've been involved with UMFM ever since, and my passion for this station and the local community's need for us continues to grow stronger - and that is why I wish to serve on the UMFM Board.
I began as a founding member and a host for "Free Range Radio", and then I hosted a show called "The Shelf" - a show dedicated to covering the local original music scene and technology used by musicians to make music and perform. These 2 shows occupied my first 5+ years at UMFM. Once my co-host left to start a family, I launched a new show, "Drums and Wires" on Tuesday nights, covering African and Caribbean music. I am a U of M graduate, an environmental engineer by day, a managing partner in my environmental engineering and science firm and I was president of the Consulting Engineers of Manitoba, a non-profit industry advocacy group, concluding in May 0f 2007. My hobbies include playing music (I've played and recorded with/for a ton of bands over the years), multimedia (video, audio, graphics) production, desktop publishing, photography, public communications and broadcasting. I know how these technologies work, and I know how they can be made even more valuable once integrated together.
I believe I have a strong commitment to UMFM, and I want to do all that I can to ensure that UMFM is the best it can be in the years to come. I am currently a member of our Programming Committee - a UMFM committee that reviews new show applications. I have many ideas that I think we can integrate into UMFM's operations to help us be even better - some, such as the ability to FTP pre-recorded shows to the station have already been implemented, others, such as podcasting and other means of broadcast distribution are still not in place but I would like to help implement suggestions for integrating newer affordable technologies into UMFM's operations. My work as president of a non-profit group gave me invaluable expertise in generating additional revenues and also in getting maximum publicity and effectiveness in operations from almost non-existent budgets. I'm also very familiar with project and corporate budgeting processes, as I have routinely managed projects involving budgets ranging from low- budget non-profit organizations to multi-million dollar engineering projects. My understanding of audio technologies provides me with a very good understanding of where our equipment functions well in the station and what we need to improve the functionality of the broadcast booth and other systems. I have a strong interest in marketing, particularly creative grass-roots marketing and I have a very strong passion in making UMFM much more of a cultural hub for the Winnipeg region.
My commitment to UMFM remains strong over the years and I wish to make it stronger by putting my name forth for consideration on the Board. I have ideas and proposals in approach and programming that I hope to contribute to UMFM, and would very much like to work with the Board to ensure a strong and successful future for UMFM. Thanks for your consideration!
Alyssa Rempel – Host - “Righteous Radio”
I would like to apply for one of the Board of Directors positons. I have always loved the University of Manitoba campus, since I came in the fall of 1996 for my Bachelor of Arts Degree. Thankfully, I've been here ever since, at least once a week and have watched the campus keep its diverse community. This diverseness I see reflected in UMFM, whether it be through the variety of shows, djs or campus news. I love the freedom I have not only with my radio show, but also with the station itself. It doesn't have to play the expected hits or commercials as Winnipeg's other stations. I can always switch it on and expect something different and not over played. My experience at working at my previous position as Director of Marketing for Providence College and Theological Seminary taught a huge amount of knowledge of advertising, budgets and marketing! Now that I am at Arnold Brothers Transport Ltd, I can use the information I gained, as well as my graphic design experience, to help the company meet its target goals. I love music, love bands and love RR (and UMFM) for getting to be that bridge between the listener and the musician. Over the past many years I have gotten to travel and represent UMFM, which is quite different than expected. I don't need to push radio singles or the station itself. I get to be more interested in the band and why they do what they do. On that note, I hope I can help in anyway and get more involved. If you would like to find out more about myself, my portfolio and resume are at www.trinity003.com
Thanks,
Alyssa
Jeff Robson – Host - “Tell The Band To Go Home” / “Steel Belted Free Range” / Ex- Volunteer Coordinator
I have been a volunteer at UMFM since 2001. In that time, I have been a board operator, show host, sat on the Board of Directors as Volunteer Coordinator, sat on the Programming Committee, and have learned a great deal about production, and the technical aspects of the station. I have held positions with the station as the Mini University radio camp instructor as well as the summer Assistant Program Director position. I currently contribute to two programs on UMFM weekly, Thursday Free Range Radio and I host my own show, Tell the Band to Go Home on Sundays, which I've done for over 5 years. I've co-hosted, guest hosted, and contributed to a number of other programs on the station. Heck, I even had to be a board operator on Cretin Radio a couple of times; now tell me that ain't dedication. Through it all, I have demonstrated a passion and reliability in everything that I've done. I've been a very vocal supporter of the station and have promoted the station wherever I can. I feel that I am a great advocate of the station, and a valuable asset to the station. I would very much like to be a part of the new (and improved) board of directors. I feel that I have a lot to offer and would take pride in representing the station and working hard to make sure that it stays great, and helping it to grow and improve in the future.
Jeff Robson
Ashley Roch – Host - “B-Ring Emissions”
I would like to apply. I have a fairly extensive knowledge of different types of music, both from abroad and from right here at home. This has resulted from working in a music store selling records/cd's since January 1999, hosting a weekly music show at UMFM, and from being involved in the local music and arts scene, both as a spectator, as well as a performer, for years. Music has always been a part of my life, and will continue to be, as I grow older, and more mature. Hopefully my input will be considered useful if I am voted onto the board.
Thank you.
Ashley
Kevin Scott – Host - “Electric Muse” / “Electric Tongue” / Ex-Board Member / Ex-Music Director
I have been involved with the station since its inception in 1998 and have taken an active interest in the shape of its sound. I have served as Music Director as well as Programming Director, and sat on several committees.
I am interested in being one of the voices that gives the station its distinctive nature. To that end, I can provide helpful feedback on numerous subjects. I can communicate very well in person as well as in written form. In short, I would like to help out any way possible and hope my experience and drive will be worth considering for the committee.
K
Lyle Skinner – Host - “Waxies Dargle”
I would like to put my name forward to be considered for the station’s Board of Directors.
I feel that in addition to my ‘love’ for campus based community radio and being a part of UMFM since its inception in 1998, I have a combination of life experience and involvement with a number local community organizations that would be an asset to the station’s Board of Directors. I enjoy working in a dynamic team environment and look forward to being involved in the development of UMFM’s future direction.
(1) Involvement with UMFM
- I have hosted and produced some 450 ‘Waxies Dargle’ shows since September 1998
- current member of the station’s Programming Committee
(2) Examples of Current & Past Involvement with Community Organizations
- Member of the Board of Directors for the Irish Association of Manitoba
- Financial Manager for the Tara Players Theatre Group
- Treasurer for WPG Branch of Canadian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy
- Campaign Loaned Rep & on Planning And Allocations Committee for Winnipeg United Way
- House Manger / Team Leader for Winnipeg Fringe Festival
- Coordinator / Shift Manager with Winnipeg Folk Festival
If you have any questions or need any additional information, please get in touch.
Take care.
Lyle
Ian Trump – Host - “cjum Midday” / ex-Board Member / ex-Director of Board & Policy Development
I would like to put my hat into the ring on this.
My Family has had strong ties to the University of Manitoba over many years. My dad was a Professor in the Engineering Faculty, My Mother graduated from U of M and then returned to certify as a teacher, at Fort Richmond Collegiate. Today my Aunt works in Library Services and My sister is part of the purchasing group at U of M. As a kid I grew up roaming the halls of the University well before I was old enough to attend. I spent many years at U of M in the quest to obtain my degree, which ultimately was awarded to me from U of W. Our family home for 30 years was located in the shadow of the University, a few blocks away.
My relationship to UMFM has been exciting and dynamic. I have participated and contributed in a technical, on air and promotional capacity under both Liz Clayton and yourself. I have represented the station at various events; and managed to support various station activities in both a financial and physical capacity. I am a dynamic individual, with good leadership and communication skills. I believe I have the business knowledge, experience and skills to do an excellent job of developing a plan for growth. I would be honoured to serve as a board member.
Thanks,
Ian Trump
Rob Willams – Host - “Cretin Radio”
Please consider this letter my application for a position on the station’s board of directors.
I have been hosting a Friday morning radio show (Cretin Radio) at the station for seven-and-a-half years. I am a huge supporter of the station, its volunteers and its programming. I believe UMFM plays a vital role in introducing Winnipeggers to new music they cannot hear anywhere else.
I am a native Winnipegger who has been active in the local music scene for nearly 20 years as a fan and occasional performer. My day job as the music writer for the Winnipeg Free Press has kept me immersed in the scene and you will often find me watching gigs of all genres, from the heaviest of metal to the twangiest of country. My love of music is diverse and that is reflected in the gigs I attend and the music I play on my radio show.
If I am selected to be on the board of directors steering committee I will bring a vast and diverse amount of knowledge to meetings and even offer the occasional witty observation. I am a hard worker and would appreciate the opportunity to brainstorm with passionate like-minded individuals about the future of UMFM and all the possibilities that exist in introducing other Winnipeggers to this special community we are part of.
Thank you for your consideration.
Rob Williams

UMFM Wants You!
Yes my radioland friends, that's right!
Now that the hectic back to school period has sorta passed it's time for me to roll out some great new volunteer opportunities that the station can really use your help on . . . I've heard from more than a few of you during my time here, saying that you wanna become more heavy involved at the radio station beyond just doing a radio show. Well chums, do I have some great stuff for you to do . . . . if you have any questions in regards to anything listed below, feel free to get in touch with me.
Now the call to arms. UMFM needs new and old people alike to help us out in some of the following areas, read on below and step up if there is something here that tickles your fancy!
PROGRAMMING COMMITTEE
The Programming committee’s mandate will be to shape and maintain the sound of UMFM. Committee members will meet roughly 6 to 7 times a year, and will vote on every new show proposal that comes our way in both the music and spoken word vein. The committee will also convene when issues of show host discipline arise. The programming committee will be comprised of no more than 8 volunteers, as well as the station manager, program director and spoken word coordinator.
Volunteers should:
·Have a base of experience in campus & community radio
·Have a wide ranging music palette and love/respect of all musical styles
·Be creative, team players.
Responsibilities would include:
·Attending committee meetings to go over new show proposals, and meet when
disciplinary issues are needed
·Identifying need for other musical genres and spoken word programs on the
UMFM schedule
Target Start Date: October/November 2005
EVENTS COMMITTEE
The UMFM Event’s committee mandate will be to plan, organize, and execute
two major in-house special events. The two events should collectively
reflect the identity of the station (including independent music,
community based programming, commitment to campus and community, spoken
word elements, etc). The events would have two specific mandates: to
raise station profile, and to raise funds (for either the radio station, a
charitable organization, or both). The events committee will be comprised
of no more than 6 volunteers, as well as the station manager and the
marketing/ sponsorship coordinator.
Volunteers should:
·Have a base of experience in fundraising, or event promotion
·Have existing contacts with venue managers, potential sponsors
·Be creative, team players.
Responsibilities would include:
·Attending committee meetings to plan special event concepts, and to meet
regularly to track progress on event organization
·Recruiting sponsors, securing venues, liasing with suppliers,
coordinating the production of promotional materials, coordinating
volunteers, event execution and wrap up.
Target Start Date: October/November 2005
**TO APPLY TO SIT ON EITHER ONE OF THESE COMMITTEES, PLEASE SUBMIT A
PARAGRAPH HIGHLIGHTING YOUR QUALIFICANTIONS TO jared@umfm.com -- deadline
is October 31, 2005**
MUSIC DEPARTMENT
The mandate for UMFM's music department is to help streamline the flow of
new music into the station. Some of the duties here include listening to
new cds and indicating good tracks to be input into our automated system,
helping catalog new cds, helping maintain our newly alphabetized library
and contacting labels to solicit new music for the station. If you are
interested in becoming part of the music department, please email
michael@umfm.com, and we'll get you on board.
Target Start Date: October/November 2005
SALES TEAM
The UMFM sales team will be comprised of a select group of volunteers who will solicit advertising and manage client accounts. The group will meet on a regular basis to ensure no redundancy in client management, the availability of inventory, etc. The sales tam will be eligible for a percentage commission of the total account revenue that they help to generate.
In order to protect UMFM’s community profile, the pursuit of new clients should first be verified with the station manager and/or the marketing/sponsorship coordinator. This formality will ensure that UMFM advertisers fit the image of the station. As such, accounts with local, community based businesses with ties to the arts communities in Winnipeg may be prioritized over national accounts, in spite of the difference in revenue potential.
The sales team will negotiate sales with clients based on UMFM’s local and national rate cards. They will be empowered to negotiate package rates based around regular rate card rates in order to encourage high-volume/ longer-term agreements with potential clients, or in order to introduce new clients to the benefits of advertising with UMFM. Some variations with the rate card rates should bee verified with a station director to ensure availability of inventory.
A new priority for the sales team will be the sale of the Bison Football Sponsorship Package. Since the demographic audience of Bison Football games varies from regular programming, a wider pool of potential clients will be pursued specifically for advertising during Bison Football broadcasts. Rates and packages for this opportunity are already prepared.
Target Start Date: October/November 2005

Introducing Erik Athavale, Marketing and Sponsorship Coordinator.
Hello all. For those I’ve yet to meet, I’m Erik Athavale. I’m a cancer, I enjoy long walks by moonlight, and I’m CJUM’s new Marketing and Sponsorship Coordinator.
I’m going to be charged with making sure this fantastic station maximizes its opportunities to promote itself in the community. That means having someone from our fair frequency show up at all our sponsored events, coming up with some station-promoted events to increase our profile, expanding our advertising client base and looking at merchandise opportunities.
Over the next few weeks, as I get my proverbial feet wet, you’ll see a bunch of new volunteer opportunities coming your way. We’ll need people to go to shows for free and to help plan parties. We’ll need people to help us figure out what to plaster our logo onto to get the kids to plaster it onto themselves. There’s more to it, of course, and the details will be provided in some upcoming emails and volunteer postings. Hopefully this introduction has served to pique your collective interests. If you need to reach me, feel free to email me at erik@umfm.com.

Women's Hands and Voices
Hello Volunteers-
In amongst all the colourful cultural posters and notices, you'll notice a couple of new charts at UMFM. These were provided in a toolkit from the Women's Hands and Voices project, an intiative of the NCRA (National Campus Radio Association) and Status of Women Canada.
Women's Hands and Voices was launched at the NCRA conference in Edmonton last spring, with a goal to conduct a nation-wide review of women's representation in all levels and spheres of non-profit, commmunity and campus radio and create a strategy-sharing program based on that review.
At UMFM, I feel that we already have an open and approachable environment. About 30% of our programmers and producers are female (up from a one-time low of 7%), which means we reflect the national average, but it also means there is room for growth right across the sector.
On music charts there is an even greater imbalance. Another goal of the Hands and Voices project is to boost the amount of music by women heard on C & C radio, using the success of CanCon as a model. You might have noticed that Jared has been putting hot-pink or orange dots on a number of new releases. These have been identified as Fem-Con, and you are encouraged to check them out, and include a couple on your play-list, if you aren't already in the habit.
Some stations have introduced special policies to address gender equity issues and offer special training and outreach programs. We'll be looking at some of these options this summer. Meantime there is a lot of food for thought on the posters. You'll find the Music and Programming Check List in the Control Room, and the News and Spoken Word Check List in the Admin Office. If you'd like to see the actual survey or check out some of the other resource material in the toolkit, please give me a call.
Best to each and every one of you,
Liz Clayton
