Reaching the Campus
(Attracting Students to UMFM, Campus Relevance)
- Let student groups know about PSA service (September presentation
to Student Council re: UMFM opportunities and services)
- Remote broadcasts from on campus (*did walk-through with SBL &
Physical Plant to determine route & viability. Est.
- UMFM as "on hold" music on campus (depth of diversity in
programming an issue for general listenership).
- Celebration week listening booth (set up Speaker's Corner, did
remote control auto racing)
- University and high school recruitment (conducted tours during
the annual high school University outreach, advertised in 'Toban,
Gradzette, campus counselling and career centre)
- Live videofeed - have the university centre TV show UMFM shows
live
- Three free minutes for speaker's corners, mock shows, or
commentary - TV screens - our music and images (working on short
UMFM promo film).
- More UMFM heard on campus (science tunnel wired summer 2004,
human ecology/dafoe tunnel for summer 2005)
- More on-campus special events (film fest during celebration
week, 24 Hour Freedom to Read Marathon with Libraries, Toban and
UMSU, movie night, our promo person booked the bands, fraternity
car race idea)
- Student contests
- umanitoba.ca - send press releases to admin (in UTS guide,
promoed Radio Drama Competition, Freedom to Read via campus staff
ememo, website).
- Play UMFM on campus (bookstore, degrees, arts lounge, etc...)
Building Community Awareness
Who is Listening? How can we serve them better?
- Marketing strategies - clear goals & accountability (hiring a
new position for this).
- Get commerce students to do market plans for UMFM (listener
survey done fall 2003, another study done 2004)
- Street reps to cover local areas (new promotions/sponsorship
position to lead committee)
- Program guides (5000 copies of winter program guide printed)
- Fave host/show
On Air
- Fresh, updated promos for each show
- More timely ads
- Genre specific promotions
- Contra deals - have businesses play station and get mentioned
on shows in return.
Onsite:
- increase visible presence of station
- UMFM presence at events (3 banners available - UMFM Presents
Policy revisited)
- UMFM booth at shows/events
- UMFM signage at businesses that advertise on UMFM
- Live remotes - Folk Festival, Jazz Festival, etc...(acquired
new remote kit).
- Cross promotion e.g., "Uptown" schedule for UMFM
- one sheet, stickers or flyers placed under windshield wipers
- get station identifier flags on mics
Online
- Internet radio tracker - also a hit counter for webpage (we
have this)
- Mention website on show to promote station as a whole and other
shows
- Online survey advertised and promoted on each show/contest
Increase Reach:
- "On hold" music featuring UMFM (VOIP coming).
- Higher bandwidth streaming radio on and off campus
- promote access via MTS/Shaw cable and umfm.com
Hosts/Producers/Volunteers Outreach
- Business cards (*cards for host/producers now available)
- Email list (*done, but not promoted yet).
- More prizes, giveaways, promo schwag
- T-Shirt giveaways (sold out of new lines of Ts, positition
posted for merch person)
- Send emails to fan base
- More free beer for hosts (?!!!?)
- Genre Specific Promotions
Music
Charts @ C & C Radion
- Make your own chart for the website (monthly)
- Place new artists on the new "white board" (done)
- Make specialty charts with designated volunteer input - not
staff. (done)
- More organized library will lead to more valid chart (done)
Programming non-prime time shifts
- Remote internet hosting
- Encourage slot sharing - alternating weeks
- Promote internet broadcasting. i.e., you are primetime in
another time zone
- Build a list of floating hosts & post floating/open time slots
on internet, at station, via weekly bulk email
- Encourage pre-recording (many people do this now)
- FTP/upload pre-recorded shows. (*Now Available)
