Dinosaur Jr.

The Venue

Once upon a time, giants walked the Earth. And none were more gigantic, for sheer noise and influence, than Dinosaur Jr. A trio composed of J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and drummer Murph, the band released records of uncompromising, ear-bleeding guitar freakouts and lustrous melody before members went their separate ways. While Mascis continued on with the Dinosaur Jr. name and then, eventually, formed J. Mascis and the Fog, and Barlow went on to form the indie-rock stalwarts Sebadoh, the name and dream that was Dinosaur Jr. has never been forgotten. The Gas Station

After an extensive 2-month tour in Canada & the US, Twilight Hotel (Dave Quanbury & Brandy Zdan) have returned home to perform at the Gas Station Theatre on Wednesday May 23rd. This performance follows a weeklong recording session for their sophomore album in Nashville, Tennessee with Juno Nominated Canadian record producer Colin Linden. Winnipeg's psychedelic folk-rock outfit Mr. Pine, in conjunction with UMFM 101.5, are pleased to present the long awaited CD release party for their fantastic album The Gift of Wolves. Since its original release in April, the album has charted nationally on campus and community radio and been described as a "mini-masterpiece" in the Winnipeg Free Press. Just in time for the holiday gift-giving season, DJ's Co-op and Hunnicutt are both releasing new mix CDs at dance party aptly titled The Holiday Mixer, Friday, December 15th at the Pyramid Cabaret. Not content to hold a traditional CD release party, Winnipeg's favourite DJs decided to make the double meaning of releasing mix CDs at a Holiday Mixer a triple meaning. They plan to have a blender and martini shaker on stage to mix drinks, which will then be sold to revellers at the party. Proceeds from the drink sales will go to Winnipeg Harvest. To aid in preparation for the event, Co-op & Hunnicutt have taped a series of instructional videos on drink mixing with a special guest bartender. These will be available on http://www.djcoop.com, one per week leading up to the party.

Hailing from North America's Mecca of minimal sounds, Montreal's Pheek has been blazing a brilliant path into the future of music, and gaining international acclaim in the process. In 1998 this lifelong music fan, early rave enthusiast, and college radio DJ attended a performance by Richie Hawtin that would forever change his perspective on music. Inspired by this performance, he adopted the moniker Pheek, and within a year he was performing his own original material live and soon released his first 12". In the seven years that have followed, JP has been making a steady rise to the upper echelons of the minimal/micro scene's most respected and innovative producers and performers. His style is rooted in the funky, minimal sounds of German tech-house, but is tempered with a heady dose of the ethereal and experimental, resulting in a unique sound all his own. Joining Pheek will be Winnipeg's very own K Money and Lo_Progression. Pheek will be giving away copies of his new album "En Légère Suspension," to lucky guests who attending the event, tickets are complimentary so ensure to find yourself with a few in hand. Grubb's CD Release "Plague City"

Get your inoculations & SARS masks out people, cuz' On Wednesday the 29th of November, the plague is spreading to the Royal Albert Arms. Presented by powerhouse in the making, Foultone Records, as well as Deep Cave Productions and UMFM 101.5, maniacally minded rapper Grubbs releases his ode to all that is sick, Plague City. The album, featuring an appearance by Canada's fastest rapper Royal-T & production by King Khela, is seconded only by the raw energy of the live performance exhibited by the Foultone Records elite. Also performing will be Foultone's kindred dark spirits, members of Deep Cave Records, and members of Saskatoon's beloved Side Road Records. Jason Molina is a tenor guitar-wielding songwriter from the shores of Lake Erie, who for years fronted the amazing Songs:Ohia. Though there is a sonic similarity to the oft-compared Will Oldham, Molina's ardent, soul-searching lyrics are more aptly compared to Neil Young or Leonard Cohen. Always a songwriter, Molina eventually decided to perform and record solo with help as needed. The first Songs:Ohia full-length arrived in 1997; released on the Secretly Canadian label, the self-titled album garnered critical acclaim. Ten albums later, Molina decided to switch gears and formed the Magnolia Electric Company. Named after the last full-length Songs:Ohia album, the new band plays songs about finally accepting one's place in this world; about standing ground and owning up to it with confidence. Final Fantasy

September 13th

As Final Fantasy, Owen Pallett is noted for his live performances, where he plays the violin into a sampler controlled by foot pedals, which then loops back one or more of the previously played musical phrases as he plays additional parts simultaneously. Final Fantasy started as a side project among many for Pallett, who was also busy with Les Mouches, the Hidden Cameras, Picastro, and the Jim Guthrie Band. It has now grown into a jarringly gorgeous juggernaut beyond anything Pallett anticipated. 101.5 UMFM proudly presents Peg City's own, and current Vancouver resident, The Gumshoe Strut as he returns home to perform live at The Royal Albert Arms on Tuesday, September 5th alongside Van City veteran Kaboomatomic, as well as Imaginations Treetrunk members Quoted Motives (Azraelian and Chadio) as part of the "Stupor Stars Of Rap Tour". Giant Sons Reunion!

The 3 members of the Giant Sons, one of this city's most criminally underrated bands are all back in town, and will be reuniting for one last show on August 31 at the Albert. The show will also correspond with local imprint G7 Welcoming Committee re-releasing all of the Son's two landmark albums in digital format on their website. A Silver Mount Zion

August 9th

A Silver Mt. Zion is a post-rock band formed in 1999 by Godspeed You! Black Emperor musicians Efrim Menuck, Sophie Trudeau and Thierry Amar. Unlike Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion's music often features vocals. The last few albums they have released contain no purely instrumental tracks. They will be returning to Winnipeg to play at the Pyramid alongside longtime indie stalwart Carla Bozulich, ex of the Geraldine Fibbers. MSTRKRFT don't really need an intro. Their signature sound has been uniting hipsters on the dance floor for a while now. A ROLLER SKATING JAM NAMED "SATURDAYS!" goes down SATURDAY, MARCH 4th, 2006 at the historical GALAXY SKATELAND (595 Portage Ave) from 10pm to 1am, tickets, including skate rental are only $9.99 at the door! After years of rumors and dashed expectations, Winnipeg's favorite DJs are officially taking their legendary dance party formula and putting it on wheels! Anticipation is already at a feverish high for the jam. Expect the usual mix of the Co-op/Hunnicutt "anything goes" sound, but with a lean towards the disco/funk and 80s jams synonymous with the roller skating experience. Fresh off a couple of great Winnipeg supporting shows in the fall of 2005, the Most Serene Republic. The band makes conventional indie rock, shiny and happy at first, with its majestic piano arrangements dancing around angst-ridden guitar riffs and warm harmonies. Their debut, Underwater Cinematographer isn't your quintessential debut album. It's too complex, too inquisitive, and too ambitious. Eclectic piano playing Winnipeg ex-pat Bob Wiseman returns to his favorite city for another entertaining show alongside the exquisite song stylings of Leah Abramson. Since 2000 Bob has been making short films on super 8, video or flash animations that he then accompanies live on accordion, guitar or casio. These eclectic pieces range from puppets that die of cancer to sarcastic infomercials about Bob's next recording to cartoons dramatizing the difficulties trying to reach his "cousin", David Geffen. The Hong Kong based Emma Segal will link up via satellite to perform live on an overhead projector and Vancouver singer songwriter, Leah Abramson, opens the show. This show will serve as a part of the Mondragon's Fund Drive, so come out and support this great independent entity! Tickets are only $10 at the door, the show starts at 9PM.

DJNation.ca is at it again, this time bringing you "Do It" on February 10th at the Exchange Event Center (115 Bannatyne). Do It will feature Marty McFly,Toronto's premiere breaks DJ who will be blending old skool, new skool, and everything funky! Also, there will be a main stage featuring some of Winnipeg's most talented single acts, ranging from breaks, electro, house, and hardstyle, including: Ryan G, Freaky Alien, Jay C, Raf K and AlphaGroove. Also, there will be a Tag Battle Stage with 4 decks and 3 mixers, including tags between some of Winnipeg's finest DJs in Techno, Trance, House, Jungle, & Breaks featuring: Nathan Zahn vs. Disco Kitty, Jungle Jane vs. Gumby, Domain vs. Polly and more! Tickets are $10 in advance, or only $15 at the door.

Ham 10th Anniversary CD Release Party

The Afterbeat CD Release for "The Personals"

The Cavern/The West End

On the weekend of January 14 and 15, 2006, Winnipeg's The Afterbeat will be hosting two CD release parties in celebration of the release of Personals, the band's latest full-length release on Bacteria Buffet Records. The first will take place at Winnipeg's newest venue, The Cavern, located in the basement of the Toad In The Hole. Joining them will be the always-entertaining JFK & The Conspirators. Cover is free, photo ID is of course required, the show starts at 10:00pm. Then on the 15th, the 'Beat move things over to the West End, where they will take the stage alongside the Barrymores and Sick City. Show is all ages, as well as 18 plus. Doors open at 7:15pm, show starts at 8:00pm. Tix are $6/$8 and available at Music Trader, The WECC, TicketMaster.
