What is it about the collective spirit of those cultures that draws them to compositions that heavily feature their respective sounds? UMFM helps unveil a new soulfunky summer experience June 2nd!

Funk Bundown, a brand spankin’ new bag of soul and funk will be unveiled at The Orbit Room, 2207 Pembina Hwy on Saturday, June 2. This housequake was tailor made for discerning aural enthusiasts longing for a regular night filled with hard and funky favourites and smooth and soulful scorchers from the late 70s to early 90s – a period in time that holds a special place in the hearts of nightlifers who want to get busy “on the one”.

Winnipeg has yet to experience a night reserved specifically for soul and funk, two universally popular genres with the city’s music and dance lovers. Though there has never been an actual residency for local soulstars and funkateers, there have been many parties and events that have catered to its popularity. Funk Bundown was crafted specifically for funk lovers of the city to unite under one groove.

The Funk Bundown concept comes from the creative mind collective of local music scene vets “Lucious” Frazer of FLAVA 107.9FM, Angelou “Jay Boogie” Flores of CKUW 95.9FM, Justin Villarin of Elite Entertainment and Ofield Williams of mood ruff, the funkyback brethren of the Bundown Combo, along with The Orbit Room’s main man-with-a-plan, Nick Zifarelli.

In addition to providing a soulfunky backdrop of musical gems, the Bundown Combo will bring out the Funk Bundown Foto Booth, where patrons will be able to ham it up in front of a lens with friends new and old and document their chic and saucy good times. There will definitely be a riot goin’ on at The Orbit Room.

Special Guest, longtime UMFM favorite, DJ @Large will also be on hand to help kickoff what is destined to be Peg City's hottest summer event!

Win Dinosaur Jr. Tickets!

Once upon a time, giants walked the Earth. And none were more gigantic, for sheer noise and influence, than Dinosaur Jr. A trio composed of J. Mascis, Lou Barlow and drummer Murph, the band released records of uncompromising, ear-bleeding guitar freakouts and lustrous melody before members went their separate ways. While Mascis continued on with the Dinosaur Jr. name and then, eventually, formed J. Mascis and the Fog, and Barlow went on to form the indie-rock stalwarts Sebadoh, the name and dream that was Dinosaur Jr. has never been forgotten. Don’t miss Dinosaur Jr. with guests Awesome Color and Lou Barlow at the Garrick Centre on May 29th. Tickets are available now for only $27.50, plus agency fees from Ticketmaster.ca, or charge by phone at 780-3333. It’s a great chance to experiment with sound and have some fun.

CALL FOR PROPOSALS: Specific Public Art Projects for Celebration Week

GoSA [the Gallery of Student Art] is looking to partner with
artists/designers/musicians who are interested in making site-specific
installations, collaborative projects, and/or design initiatives that
activate the U of M campus, engaging student life, the university
geographical and intellectual landscape, and raising questions about the
spaces that we live/work in.

Consider the places at the U of M that are highly trafficked, but
considered "non-places" or places between places. In an environment
where space in high demand it is appropriate to engage these non-places -
bringing them life and energy.

Potential sites:
- the underground tunnels
- the quad (grassy area by the main bus stop)
- the fireside lounge (beside GOSA in university centre)
- the third floor hallway that links Degrees, UMFM, Wise Guys & IQ's
- various buildings and green spaces on campus - be creative!

GOSA will help artists with technical support, installation, promotion,
and site logistics. The projects will be installed for UMSU's Celebration Week, Jan 22 thru 28, 2007.

PROPOSALS SHOULD INCLUDE:
- name and contact information of artist(s) / designer(s)
Please include a main contact name with a group proposal.
- a concise description of your proposed project, including the LOCATION.
(500 words maximum)
- sketches to support your written proposal
- curriculum vitae (one for each artist, in the case of a group project)

Please address your proposals to the Selections Committee and drop them
in the UMSU office ***SUBMISSION DEADLINE - NOVEMBER 20***

In addition to unveiling UMFM’s brand new logo, we’ll also be launching a line of limited edition t-shirts. Designed by 6 of the hottest local graphic artists, these t-shirts are a bargain at $20 – but snap ‘em up quick as this price is one-night-only and the term “limited edition” ain’t no marketing ploy – only 25 of each design will be printed. Tickets for the UMFM Logo Launch are available at the door for the student-friendly price of only $4.99! Doors open at 9PM, with music starting shortly before 10.

The Hoe Must Go On – A Benefit for Local Singer/Songwriter

On Tuesday, August 30, 2005, The West End Cultural Centre will host a special benefit concert for local singer/songwriter JP Hoe, who was the victim of a recent theft. Immediately following his well-received concert at Old Market Square as part of The Winnipeg Fringe Festival, someone stole Hoe’s two main guitars from their stand, backstage. Currently putting together demo recordings for his anticipated full length debut CD and planning fall tour dates, the struggling independent musician faces the daunting task of replacing his main instruments, and so a group of friends and fans have put together a benefit show to help pay for guitars, because The Hoe Must Go On.

The night will feature a set by JP Hoe and his backing band, The Truly Richards, which is comprised of members of local pop/rock band Quinzy. Hoe’s powerful voice and captivating stage presence have been cultivated over years of performing, starting with a role in Les Miserables at a young age. Working in theatre and bands helped Hoe develop his skills, which have made him a much talked about as-yet unsigned artist. His debut EP, The Here in Review, released in 2003, immediately garnered widespread acclaim with its infectious melodies and powerful arrangements. It has gained radio airplay on campus stations CKUW, UMFM, and Kick FM, as well as on CBC, Q94, and Hot 103. Hoe is currently working on material for a full-length follow up, which will be widely released.

Also appearing will be Winnipeg acoustic pop duo, Easily Amused. The members of Easily Amused, Renee Lamoureux and Keith Macpherson have steadily built a huge following across Canada and The U.S. through relentless touring over the past 5 years. They are much in demand at college and university campuses and as concert headliners. Following their successful 2001 debut, Novice, Easily Amused released Simple Stuff in 2004. Its memorable and effective melodies and the powerful sound of the two voices combining are a big hit with fans, reviewers, and television and radio media. The band has appeared on national television and community and commercial radio all over North America, and won the title of Canada’s Best Online Indie Artist in a national competition in 2002, and have been nominated for various awards including a Western Canadian Music Award in 2004.

There will be other special guests and performers to be announced, and a huge CD raffle. All proceeds from the evening will help JP Hoe to resume his career.

The Hoe Must Go On, featuring JP Hoe, Easily Amused and special guests at The West End Cultural Centre, 586 Ellice Avenue, August 30, 2005. Tickets are $12 at Ticketmaster or The West End Cultural Centre, $15 at the door.

Tremblay's Symphony of Alienation Comes Alive on UMFM!

As part of TremblayFest 2005, UMFM is pleased to present 2 plays by Quebec playwright Michel Tremblay – Berthe and Johnny Mangano and His Astonishing Dogs. Both plays offer a behind-the-scenes look at the world of show business in a Montreal cabaret, The Coconut Inn, and present lives full of frustration, unrealized dreams and ultimately the acceptance of being trapped in a hopeless situation.

The two characters in Berthe are trapped in their own worlds. Berthe is trapped in her glass window selling tickets and is unable to hear what happening onstage. During the play, we learn about her unrealized dream of becoming a famous actress and by the end her hopeful dream turns into an acceptance that she will never obtain this goal. Also trapped is the doorman who says only the same words (“Showtime! Showtime!”) before every show night after night. Berthe is directed by Justin Olynyk and stars Marian Martin in the title role and Jamaal Ramole as the doorman.

Note that the UMFM production of Berthe and Johnny Mangano and His Astonishing Dogs involves different directors and casts than the At Home Theatre Company’s production of these same two plays.

Berthe and Johnny Mangano and His Astonishing Dogs will be broadcast Wednesday February 2 at 8 pm and Saturday February 5 at 12 noon on UMFM (101.5 FM).

Local theatre takes centre stage every Wednesday at 8 pm on 101.5 UMFM
