Coop, Brace, and Grasshopper to compete in DMC finals
With DJ Coop earning top spot at the Saskatoon DMC Elimination earlier this week, an unprecedented 3 DJs with UMFM affiliations will be competing in the National Finals in Hamilton September 10th.
"I was much happier with how my set went in Saskatoon compared to how it went in Winnipeg", says Co-op, adding "I knew I had a winner, it was just a matter of getting it right."
As a result of Co-op's victory, Winnipeg will have 3 representatives at the National battle. Winnipeg's DJ Brace qualifies automatically as the reigning Canadian champ, and 4-time Winnipeg champ DJ Grasshopper, who now lives in Vancouver, is Winnipeg's official representative as he placed first at the local competition on June 26th.
Grasshopper was resident here during the early days of UMFM, holding down Tone Arm Tactics on Friday nights for several years before he headed west to seek his fame and fortune. Coop and Brace still live in Winnipeg, where you can hear The Magical Crates of Co-op and Brace's Keep It Surreal Thursday afternoons on UMFM 101.5.
DMC Canada rules state that any DJ can enter in any two of the eliminations across the country, regardless of where he or she resides. Many DJ choose to use this rule to try their luck in other cities. This year alone, 5 of the DJs in the National final qualified in cites other than their own.
The DMC battle consists of 6 minute routines by each DJ. A panel of judges, usually other DJ's or members of the urban music scene, grade each competitor on the following criteria: - Technical skills and tricks (technique, scratching, speed).
- Creation of breakbeats (juggling, beat morphing).
- Running mixes (consistency, accuracy, rhythm)
- Originality (creativity, originality, musical selection).
- crowd reaction (entertaining stage presence, responsiveness).
For more information on the DMC, see www.dmccanada.com. ( More Info )

UMFM 101.5 & Winnipeg Harvest Need Your Support For The Holidays!!
In December of last year, UMFM ran a highly successful promotion called "A Season of Giving," to benefit our local food bank, Winnipeg Harvest. Generous artists, record labels, and sponsors donated prizes that were given away on the air throughout the month. When picking up their prizes, winners were asked to bring a non-perishable food item to donate to those in need. With only a couple of UMFM programs participating, we were able to accumulate almost 100 lbs of food, which helped feed needy families during the holidays. Due to the overwhelming generosity of sponsors and listeners, the program was a total success.
This year, we plan to give away more prizes and raise more donations, as we aim to get the whole station involved in this worthwhile project. And why not? Everybody wins: musicians, record labels, and we here at UMFM love to share music and prizes with people who appreciate them, and our listeners get to reap the rewards by taking home some great new CDs and prizes. Most importantly, the real winners are the thousands of needy children and families in Winnipeg who get some much needed support at the time of year when nobody should have to go hungry.
Tune in to Steel Belted Free Range Radio on UMFM at 6:30 pm on Thursday, November 25 , as we kick off this year’s donation drive. We’ll unveil some of the many prizes that we’ll be giving away until the end of the year and explain how you can support this worthwhile project.
With your support, we can make this project even more successful than last year, and help many more families in need.
